Let’s face some facts: It doesn’t matter how motivated you are to stick to a goal, there will be days when you will feel a little bit off… It happens, is normal, and is not big-a-deal.

But it sure is not pleasing when you need that summer body, but you aren’t quite in the mood for the gym. Or when you really wish to finish that book, but you don’t want to write today. Here are some tips you need to use to motivate yourself in your “off” days.

Some of those will work automatically, but some of them are meant to build some sort of habit, so you can work even when your motivation fuel is low! So without any further ado, let’s break them down and start to motivate yourself on “off” days!


Motivate yourself in "off" days

I know is not the most fun thing you can do, but sometimes you are just too worked out. Try to stop for a second, close your eyes and focus only on your breathing. This way, you can reset your brain.

Make a work playlist

Work playlists are your own mixtape to get the job done. I have a playlist I listen only when working, and another one when I’m going to the gym. It is very important to NOT listen to your work playlist when you are not working.

You want to trick your brain to enter the work-zone when you hear a certain soundtrack. This is one tip that works if done repeatedly, even when you are in the mood. Just make that playlist to motivate yourself on “off” days!

Pomodoro technique

If you don’t know what I am talking about, let me explain. Pomodoro technique is used to make yourself start working when you are not in the mood, or when you want to be extra-productive. I advise you to do it all the time.

It’s a really simple technique. You work for 25 minutes, and after that, you take a break for 5 minutes. The thing is, you hit your productivity peak at 15 minutes of work. After those, you will get less productive by the minute.

Is a great way to start your job, the cause is only 25 minutes, it ain’t that long. The best thing is that most of the time you will want to continue working. Which is what you were struggling in the first place.

Talk to someone

Sometimes, we are so caught up in our life, we forget to keep connections with our friends and family. If you find yourself into an unmotivated rut, just talk to someone, see what they been up to, make contact.

More often then not, you will be motivated on some extent, and who knows, maybe even inspired. And as a plus, you get to talk to someone dear to you! it will help motivate yourself in an “off” day.

Chunk it up

Projects can be very intimidating, and your lack of motivation can be caused by that. But if that is the problem, the solution is very simple: Chunk your project into tiny pieces.

You don’t want to go to the gym because it requires much work. You have to pack your gym clothes, dress up, actually go/drive to the gym, and when you get there you have to work out.

But if you look at it as many small things you need to do, it becomes easier! Is not hard to pack the clothes, not to dress up, then to walk… please, is easy peasy. When you workout, you already chunked the work into sets and reps. So you are good to go!

Force yourself!

Discipline=Freedom. This is a truth not many of us are aware of, but it is certainly a fact. If you are disciplined enough to do something even if you are so not in the mood, you are free to do anything you want.

Discipline is not easy to attain but it is not impossible either. It’s a habit, so it must be done as much as you can. as Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”. Make a habit to motivate yourself in an “off” day.

The 5-second rule

The 5-second rule is an easy technique you can do literally any day, at any time, to make sure you are as productive as possible. Basically, when you don’t want to do something, count from 5 to 1. When you say 1, you just do what you don’t want to do.

Is that simple?

Actually, this is how I got myself to write this article. I had an “off” day, I meditated, chunked my projects, even talk with my girlfriend about it, and in the end, I counted. And as you can see, I wrote the article and post it! If I can motivate myself, you can too!

We live in a world where distractions are everywhere. As a result, you end up having a short attention span that we should, which affects our work, life and even relationships. We acknowledge the importance of staying focused on our life. So, in this article, we will talk about how to focus more on important tasks.

We have the attention span of 6 seconds. It’s the same length as for a goldfish… Chances are you already been distracted until you reached this part of the article.

So why is this happening?

As I said before, we live in a world where distractions are all among us. Television, loud noises, kids playing, phone notifications, emails, or even our own mind can make us lose concentration and cause us hours of work weekly.

Even though this is a severe problem, it doesn’t mean that we can’t do something about it. Even more, we can do some simple practices to train our focus to last longer. So here are our tips on how to focus more:

You want to stay focused for more time and we bring this meditation into discussion… So what about it? Meditation is a mindfulness practice. This means it will train your brain to be engaged with the present ignoring any distracting thought you may have at some point in your work time.

I usually meditate first thing in the morning for 10 minutes. I focus only on my breath, and every time I catch myself daydreaming, I pull myself back to where I was. This way, I’m training my mind to be more aware of this slippery thoughts and to push me back into work when I need it!

But be aware of the fact that you will not become a focus master after one session. The focus span will build with time, and your quality of work will slowly but steadily increase.

Pomodoro technique

Pomodoro technique is one of the best productivity tools you have at your disposal. It’s easy to use, and the results are, at least in my case, visible from the first session.

So what is the Pomodoro technique? Well, simply put, it is working for a 25 minute period, and then taking a break for another 5. You will keep doing this process as long as you need to. But I recommend 4 times. This way you will have 2 hours work-sessions.

How does it work? It is really simple. You are not productive from the get-go, you increase in productivity until you hit a peak, and from that point, your productivity decreases. The peak is at 15 minutes. After that you start to lose it, you will lose concentration, focus, and even interest.

The 5-minute break is to reset your brain. After those 5 minutes, you can start over and have another productive session where you will stay focused longer, helping you finish tasks quicker and better.

What should this suppose to mean? I know it sounds silly, but let me explain. Your brain likes the routine and uses some external factors to figure out what will happen next.

For example: If you’re hungry and you smell food, your mouth will secrete saliva because is preparing for eating. Or, this is why specialist advises you to use your bed only for sleeping. Because where you go to bed, your brain knows it’s time to sleep.

So what is that playlist about though?

You need to find a playlist that you listen only to where you work. In time, your brain will get used to listening to that playlist only when you are working. As a result, you will stay focused more on the task at hand.

The most important piece of advice about this tip is: you shouldn’t listen to that playlist anywhere else or while doing anything else but work. It will lose effectiveness and you will have to find another one.

Another important advice for this tip is to use a playlist with instrumental music only. The part of the brain responsible for thinking is also responsible for the understanding of human speech. So if a person is singing, your brain will focus on that, making you lose focus!

Turn off your notification

I’m saying your notification and not wi-fi because you may need your phone at work. In high school years, I had a lot of housework on my phone because we couldn’t buy that specific exercise book because it was old.

Therefore, we took a picture of the pages, and we look at that picture to read the question. And I wasn’t always turning off the notification. Therefore, I would lose time answering messages or surfing the Internet.

If you don’t need your phone to work, then I would advise you to not use it at all. Turn off the internet, put it aside, and finish your work before touching it again!

Create a workspace

Your workspace is your sacred place where you will do all your work. The way this function is the exact same way as with the playlist. You have a space that you use for work and work only.

This way your brain will know that it is time for you to get some job done, so it will concentrate more, making you stay focused and more productive.

Create chunks

Chunks are defined as small goals you must achieve in your journey of completing a bigger one.

Let’s say you need to write a five-page essay, and it is due next week. Well, you can start researching in day one, make a draft on day two, and then write a page every day, or take a break after you write a page.

Anyway, your goals should be to create chunks small enough for you to complete, but big enough to be a challenge. If it is too hard to do it, you will stress too much and quit. If it is too easy, you will get bored… and quit.

Chunks must have a deadline, and it must be measurable in some way. If done correctly they will boost your focus, because you will work on a very specific topic, and your brain will go into a single direction!

The number one mistake you make, when you are doing everything right, is telling people about your goals.

Surprising stuff, isn’t it? I was confused as well when I first heard it. But hear me out, everything will make sense!

Think of it this way. When you tell someone about your target of running a marathon, they would be happy for you and would congratulate you for having this incredible goal.

The thing is, your brain doesn’t know the difference between being congratulated because you made a statement and being congratulated for actually doing what you said you were doing. And in result, you will live a feeling of accomplishment. And THAT is the problem!

Your brain tricks you in making you believe you already walked the walk when you barely talk the talked. As a result, you lose motivation. You will not have the motivation to do something you already did, right?

The theory had been tested!

Peter Gollwitzer ran a test on 163 people who were separated into two groups. Both of them wrote their goals down, but one group actually said their goal to the others, and the other group was asked to remain silent.

Both of the groups were offered 45 minutes and resources to go and try to achieve their goals. The only catch is that they could quit any time they wanted.

The people in the first group who only wrote their goal down worked for the whole 45-minute period without stopping. And in the end, they admitted they still had a long way to go!

But the group with the people who told the others what their goal was, worked for approximately 33 minutes, and believed they made incredible progress even though they weren’t!

This result suggests that when you tell others your target, you are less likely to do the work, and on top of that, you will believe you are progressing when you’re not! And this is why most of us fail.

So now you know that this may be THE mistakes that stop you from writing that book or having that summer body you always wanted. Don’t let your brain trick you, and blocks you to achieve your goal!

But what happens if someone asks you about your goals and you tell them? Well, the same exact thing. You should never reveal your goals. And if you’re asked, I’m afraid the only thing you can do is to give a vague answer or beat around the question!

Keep the goals to yourself; you don’t have to reveal to the world, not even to those who are closest to you! Write them down, do a plan, execute it, and clap for yourself because you deserve it!

The quote “Work in silence, let your success do the noise” is as true as it can be, and you should take advantage of that!

Probably the most common objects you forget are your phone, wallet, and keys. This is because we always have to have them with us. Therefore, you need a system.

My brother always forgets at least one of those things, so he thought “if I always check me for those objects, I will always know if I don’t have them”. And this is what he does. Before leaving the house, work, gym or any other room he stayed for a while, he checks for his phone, wallet, and keys.

Of course, you can do this with any object you frequently forget. I can tell you, it works like a charm. But what about important stuff we rarely use, like a project for school, or some files for work, or your gym card when going to the gym.

Make sure you prepare everything in advance! The truth is, you forget the stuff you forget because you are always in a rush, and this is not good for you. Take your time to plan and pack ahead.

If you don’t want to forget that project for school, put it in your bag from the night before. Add your gym card to your gym bag so you don’t forget it. And so on.

If you constantly forgetting something because you’re in a rush the day you need those things, just prepare as much as you can when you’re not in a rush!

Make a to-do list

But what if you can’t pack in advance? Let’s say you need to remember to add some files on your stick device. Or maybe you need to remember to do laundry.

Well, the solution is pretty simple: sticky notes! Just stick some notes around your house or your office room. But what if you don’t want to? Use a daily planner, like the one we already explained how to use in this article on Easy ways to plan your days. A daily planner is basically a to-do list, but where you can add more notes. Therefore, is a sticky note that you can check and uncheck.

If you want to use your smartphone for this job, well, you can. Write it in your notes and add them to your main screen. It is the same thing. In conclusion. If you don’t want to forget it, write it down.

Note it to your calendar

Forgetting about anniversaries, birthdays, or any kind of a special occasion is the worst. But solving the problem is relatively easy.

A) note important events on your phone calendar. What you like to do is create a reminder for a few days earlier. For example, if I need to remember my brother’s birthday on 20th December, I will create a reminder that would pop up on the 15th. This way I have time to buy him a gift, or maybe think for a surprise.

B) Buy a calendar and write the important dates in there. It is important that you see the calendar every day and is important to build a habit of writing reminders and checking your calendar for them. This is the easiest way to do it, and the most practical one!

This is it, guys! I know this is not the most mind-blowing technique in the world. Quite the opposite! I believe we shouldn’t complicate so much. The easiest ways to do things are the best in my opinion.

When creating a minimalist space you should first think about the base colors. You should opt for neutral, pastel colors in order to balance the space if you choose to place objects with bright, eye-catching colors.

Make sure to choose pigments that can blend in easily. Also, take into consideration the openness of the space. If your home has a lot of natural light, the white paint tends to look warmer so balance it out with blue undertones. If your space has a lot of artificial lights, do the opposite.

What happens is that the level and the type of light influences the undertones of the white paint. So keep this in mind when choosing the base colors.

Keep it clean

It is well known that keeping your house clean is a must for implementing minimalism into your life. Let’s be honest. We all have those drawers left somewhere full of unnecessary objects, some piles of papers on the kitchen counter and other things that stop us from embracing the full potential of minimalism.

Also, be consistent! It is not enough to clean up space once. Every once in awhile take a look and do the same process.

Use textures

A minimalist space is prone to looking dull because of the color scheme. It doesn’t have to be that way. Don’t be afraid to play a little with the textures.

You could choose textured wood, natural stone or just add some blankets, rugs, pillows, whatever you prefer.

But keep in mind the fact that you shouldn’t exaggerate with the textures. Keep it simple and classy.

Choose geometric shapes

Minimalism is usually based on geometric, simple shapes. All the furniture should have at most a bend. Avoid objects in a spiral.

A minimalist home needs symmetry in order to keep your eyes focused and entertained. The whole purpose of minimalism is to get rid of the unnecessary objects that could distract us from what is actually important and valuable.

Keep it simple

Following the principle “less is more”, get rid of the objects that you don’t need. For a minimalist design, opt for spacious storage, preferably somewhere not visible.

The fluid movement is an important factor in a minimalist home so always keep in mind the spatial planning!

With that being said, play around with your options. It doesn’t have to be boring. Just keep it classy and simple and create your own minimalist space with an elegant approach to interior design.

Aaron Marino knows how it is to be down on your knees, but most importantly how to rise up to the best version of yourself! He’s funny, straight, and his integrity is unmatched!

He has 5.44 million subscribers and over 804 million views on his channel! I started my self developing journey by watching YouTube videos, and slowly but gradually, I saw some changes. The first video on this particular topic was one from alpha.m and from that moment I was hooked!
